How We Work
Red Fire Farm’s success is a culmination of everyone’s individual effort; every move we make on the farm makes a difference. Organic farming is reliant on good, solid crews in the field, and we expect everyone to pull their weight and master the skills of farming.
We seek crew members who have some farming experience, (though we are willing to train folks with no experience) a deep work ethic, a sense of humor, and a strong commitment to providing amazing organic food for our community. We are also looking for folks who would like to help us grow and improve the farm into the future.
We are proud to employ a diverse work force including (but not limited to) working parents, current and formerly incarcerated people, military veterans, immigrants and asylum seekers, retired folks on their second or third careers, and people with mental health needs. We are also queer- and trans-friendly. Our farm management team is proudly made up by a large number of strong women.
We are truly a merry band of people who like to work together toward a common goal: Providing delicious organic produce to our customers, making a living and having some fun along the way. Organic farming can sometimes be difficult but at Red Fire Farm we know that we are all in this together!
The Workday at Red Fire Farm
During the primary growing season (April through September), we primarily work Monday through Friday. We start at 7 a.m. and work until about 5:30 or 6:30 p.m. (sometimes later, when the season is really cranking). We also work some weekends as needed during early transplanting season, and as needed in the fall for frost protection.
Locations
Based on access to good farmland in our area, we have two farm locations with their own crews: Granby and Montague. If you have a preference for location, or can be flexible between both, please let us know when applying.
Work in Granby
Our farmland in Granby is located in southern Hampshire County on Taylor and Carver Streets. Fields of flat vegetable soils and upland pasture surrounding a substantial beaver pond make the farm as picturesque as it is productive. The farm is 25 minutes from Amherst, 30 minutes from Northampton, and 10 minutes from the Chicopee Memorial State Park (beautiful swimming lake); you can also easily get to the attractions of the Five College area. The farm is located directly adjacent to a Granby town park with a soccer field, baseball diamond, and volleyball court. The Holyoke Range has some great nearby hiking also.
The Granby farm focuses on growing greens, early season crops, and a wide mix of storage crops as well as in-ground greenhouse growing. This is home base for PYO (pick-your-own) fields for most of our CSA members in Western MA.
Work in Montague
Our farm in Montague is about 45 minutes north of Granby. The farmland here is some of the best in the world, as it is made up of the Hadley Sandy Loam soil. The farm is on a quiet road in a stretch of land along the Connecticut River and is 20 minutes from Amherst, 30 minutes from Northampton, and 15 minutes from Greenfield. This farm focuses on the daily harvest main season crops, many many types of organic vegetables, bedding plants for retail sales in the spring, cut-flower production, and storage crops. The main farm office is also located here.
